*Wines received as samples
I recently received some wines from Elk Creek Vineyards in Kentucky. With the upcoming holiday these wines have been crafted to be welcome additions to a costume party. I'd like to share my notes on two of the wines released - a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ghostly White Chardonnay
Appearance: Medium light intensity, yellow gold, clear.

Nose: Pear, honeydew, melon, citrus, vanilla, orange blossom, apple, honey, Calvados.

Palate: Medium acidity, medium body, medium high alcohol (feels a little too warm). Flavors of citrus, green and yellow apple, crisp, refreshing. Medium finish.

This wine was fruity and tart though the alcohol seemed a little off balance. I would recommend pairing it with some tart cheeses, maybe goat. Samples with a Gabietou, which was excellent.

Bone Dry Red Cabernet

Appearance: Medium intensity, plum/cranberry red, clear.

Nose: Medium intensity, cinammon, black fruit, blackberry, plum, currant, clove, soft chocolate, oak.

Palate: Medium high acidity, grippy medium tannin, full body, cranberry, currant, blackberry, oak.
This wine would be great with fatty meats (salami, steak) or sharp cheddars. I would highly recommend decanting or opening this a while before serving, being a newer red it is slightly tight upon first opening.

Elk Creek Vineyards is located in Owenton, KY and is billed as the state's largest winery. They offer a large variety of wines for sale on their website and distribute to a number of retailers in the area. You can visit the winery which is approximately one hour from the cities of Lexington, Louisville, Cincinnati.

Cheers!
